The chapter commences with a discussion of the underlying assumptions of a Foucaultian approach to social theory, focusing upon the role of discourse and the relationship between knowledge and power. Foucault's work has had a profound impact on the medical humanities over the last decade or so. However, most work to date has focused on Foucault's earlier writings rather than his later contributions on the self and governmentality. This article assesses the significance of the concept of governmentality for critical scholarship in the medical humanities, particularly in creating ethical Foucault taught there from January 1971 until his death in June 1984.

Jonathan Xavier Inda teaches anthropology and global cultural studies in the Department of Chicana/o Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
