Metastases are most frequently localised to the liver and, as few patients are candidates for potentially curative surgery, this is associated with a poor prognosis. There is currently little published evidence for the optimal management and treatment of metastatic uveal melanoma and So while most melanomas do form on the skin, it is possible for a melanoma to form elsewhere.

This tendency is so strong—more than 80% of patients with metastatic disease have liver metastases—that if someone is diagnosed with uveal melanoma and then develops metastasis without liver involvement, many doctors will question the initial diagnosis. Uveal melanoma is known to be a rare and aggressive type of melanoma, and it primarily affects the eye. Patients with uveal melanoma typically have poor prognosis, and there are currently no accepted optimal management approaches for these patients. Reference.
